Your Values Are the Answer Key to Your Life: Here’s How to Get Crystal Clear on Them

Jan 20, 2026

If You’re Successful but Still Wondering “Is This It?”, Start Here 👇

From the outside, you look unstoppable. You’ve got the results, the resume, and the receipts. But inside? You feel like your life runs you, not the other way around. Your days feel like a treadmill, your spark is MIA, and your “success” feels strangely hollow.

This is the success-on-paper paradox. You’ve done everything “right,” yet you don’t feel right.

Your soul is exhausted because you’ve been chasing goals that don’t belong to you - goals shaped by pressure, expectation, and survival, not personal truth.

What you’re really suffering from is a misalignment problem. And the fastest, most science-backed way to do that? Figuring out - and following - your core values. (And not the Pinterest version or the company wall-art kind - the deep, internal drivers that act as your emotional GPS.)

When you really know them everything sharpens: your energy, your boundaries, your decisions, your power.

The Science of Values and Fulfillment

Social psychologist Shalom Schwartz describes values as “guiding principles” that shape your decisions and define what matters most. And studies show that when your daily actions align with your core values, you experience:

  • Higher motivation
  • Greater life satisfaction
  • Stronger psychological well-being
    (Sheldon & Elliot, 1999)

Why? Because alignment feels safe to your brain. When your external behavior matches your internal compass, your nervous system relaxes. You feel grounded, clear and energized.

In contrast, when you’re living in conflict with your values - saying yes when you mean no, chasing goals that don’t excite you - it creates cognitive dissonance, the mental friction that feels like “This just isn’t it.” And over time, that friction becomes exhaustion, irritability, burnout, and chronic self-doubt.

So if you feel:

  • Tired no matter how much you rest
  • Unmotivated despite being ambitious
  • Guilty for wanting more
  • Stuck in “I should be happy, but I’m not”

It’s highly likely that you're misalignedAnd the path back to energy and clarity starts with knowing what actually matters to you.

Signs You’re Out of Alignment (Even If You’re “Successful”)

Meet Lisa (not her real name). From every outside measure, she’s totally successful. But starting on Sunday nights, there’s always a growing pit in her stomach, dreading the upcoming work week. Everything feels a bit hollow and no matter how much she achieves, it’s still never enough to make her feel happy.

Sound familiar?

You might be living outside your values if:

  • You keep hitting goals but feel nothing afterward
  • You say yes out of “shoulds” or obligation, not desire
  • You second-guess your decisions
  • You dread the week before it even starts
  • Your accomplishments feel hollow
  • You fantasize about burning everything down and starting over
  • You feel guilty for wanting something different

I want you to hear something: This isn’t failure. It's data. Your nervous system is whispering: “This isn’t it.”

You don’t necessarily need a new job or a new life. You need a new compass.

The 3 Big Lies High Achievers Believe About Values

First, let’s clear the air about a few things I often see and hear:

Lie #1: “I should already know my values.”
Nope. Most people inherited their values through education, religion, family, society - be nice, achieve more, don’t disappoint anyone - long before they were conscious enough to question it.

Lie #2: “Values are soft.”
Values are strategy. They eliminate confusion, decision fatigue, and guilt-driven yeses. Nothing drives performance and behavior more than knowing and following your values. I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL.

Lie #3: “Values never change.”
Your values evolve as you do. The ones that drove you at 25 might drain you at 40. If you haven’t thought about your values in the past year, you’re overdue.

How to Identify Your Real Core Values (Without a Boring Quiz)

Your values aren’t what you say matters - they're what you DO on a daily basis.
Here’s my no-fluff, four-step process for getting crystal clear:

1. Name Your Top 5 and Pressure-Test Them

Ask:

  • Would I fight for this value?
  • Does it stay true when things get hard?
  • Do I feel resentful when I violate it?
  • If someone who knows me well had to guess my top values by watching my calendar and bank statements, would this one make the list?
  • Do I feel physically different - lighter, more energized - when I'm living in alignment with it?
  • Could I explain to a 10-year-old why this value matters to me and actually mean it?

If a value only looks good on paper, toss it. Real values feel grounding, inspiring and electric.

2. Your Pet Peeves Are Pointing Right to Them

Anger is data. So is frustration.

  • Hate micromanagement? → You might value autonomy and freedom.
  • Drained by small talk? → You might value depth and connection.
  • Resentful when your time is wasted? → You might value efficiency and purpose.
  • Restless when growth stops? → You might value mastery and progress.

Your pet peeves are huge value clues!

3. Track Your Energy

Your body doesn’t lie.

What experiences make you feel expansive? When do you feel drained? Where do you feel like you disappear?

Values-aligned experiences and decisions give you energy, while misaligned ones suffocate it.

Audit your calendar. Ruthlessly.

4. Pull from Peak Moments

Think of times when you felt most alive, proud, or powerful. What was being honored or emphasized?

  • Creativity?
  • Courage?
  • Freedom?
  • Impact?

Your best moments point directly to your core values.

What Changes When You Live Your Values

When you live aligned, you stop outsourcing yourself, your power and your happiness.

Decisions get faster because clarity replaces confusion
Boundaries get stronger because you’re living in your truth
Confidence rises because congruence fuels certainty
Burnout fades because you’re no longer giving yourself or your energy to things that are misalignment

Back to Lisa.

Freedom. Creativity. Impact. Those were her three.

And suddenly, years of chronic exhaustion made perfect sense. She wasn't burned out because she was weak. She was burned out because she was living in direct conflict with her own wiring.

One insight. Massive shift.

That's what alignment does.

How to Use Your Values as Your Daily GPS

Values aren’t powerful when you identify them, they’re powerful when you apply them.

You can do this by using the V.A.L.U.E. Method:

V — Visualize your values daily
What you don't see, you forget. What you forget, you stop living.

Post your values in places you can't ignore them - your mirror, your laptop, your phone lock screen. Journal about them in the morning before the noise of the day takes over. This isn't woo - this is how your brain builds new neural pathways. Repetition is how rewiring works.

A — Audit your calendar
Your calendar is a confession. It tells the truth about what you're actually prioritizing - whether you like it or not.

Look at this week. What's on there that energizes you? What drains you? What would you delete in a heartbeat if you thought you could get away with it?

That data is gold. Start small and remove one misaligned activity. Add one values-aligned one. Repeat.

L — Lead with one value first
Don't try to honor all five values at once - that's a fast track to overwhelm.

Pick one. Let it be your filter for your next decision. Does this align with my top value right now? Yes or no. That's it.

One value. One decision at a time. That's how new patterns actually stick.

U — Unsubscribe from misalignment
Some of what's draining you isn't a task - it's a person, a role, a version of yourself you've been performing for other people's comfort. And you've been renewing that subscription on autopilot.

You don't have to blow up your life. But you do have to start saying no to the things that require you to abandon yourself. Every yes to misalignment is a no to your own energy, clarity, and power

E — Expand from the inside out
It can be easy to get sucking into setting goals based on what looks impressive, what's expected, or what you think you should want. Then you hit the goal and wonder why it feels hollow.

Flip the script and start with who you are - your values, your wiring, your truth - and build your goals from there. This is the only kind of success that actually feels like success.

Your Values Are the Answer Key. It’s Time to Use Them.

You've been working hard. Probably too hard, for too long, toward things that may not even be yours.

What if the answer wasn't more hustle but more alignment?

When you get clear on your values and start living from them, something shifts at a level that's hard to describe until you feel it. The exhaustion lifts. The right decisions become obvious. You stop second-guessing yourself and start trusting yourself. People notice. You notice.

This is the foundation of my 1-on-1 coaching and it's where some of the most profound transformations I've witnessed begin. Not because I have all the answers, but because I'm really good at helping you find yours.

If you're ready to stop running on someone else's compass, let's talk.
